Our Stories.

Hello, my name is Ellen Sloan, RHIT, CNA. I am a native Smoketown resident and I love my community. My roots go deep. The passion for my neighborhood extends in every direction possible. I have been a Power Member and Change Maker with Network Center for Community Change, and I am a member of the Smoketown Neighborhood Association and The Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.

I moved to Smoketown at age 7. Smoketown was an isolated neighborhood where everyone knew each other. I remember going to Grace [the OPCC] for cooking classes, art, and skating. Smoketown was exciting! I had a great childhood with no chaos and fighting. I saw a lot of poverty, but it was a teaching, learning, grooming cultivating time in my life.

I have a hope for this community to become as vibrant as it used to be, and I believe Smoketown Family Wellness Center can put that into drive. I believe in the mission [of SFWC] because you can share what you want to see in your community instead of someone dictating what will be. So, sitting on the board of the Smoketown Family Wellness Center is both an honor and a privilege.

“I was drawn to Smoketown… and have had the pleasure of meeting many dynamic residents and community members working to build on the heritage and improve the neighborhood. In spite of the poor health outcomes, the community is working to take advantage of the many resources and assets to begin to change that narrative.”
