Our Community

Louisville’s first African American neighborhood, Smoketown, has a strong history of heritage, pride, and community. Once a thriving community, Smoketown has been impacted by many societal ills and has experienced an attrition of resources. Smoketown Family Wellness Center works to bring needed resources back into the community with the aim to increase overall wellness for youth and their families.

The Center houses a teaching kitchen, multipurpose space, literacy corner and six exam rooms. The facility and building are core to the ability to accomplish our vision. From the moment you walk into our center, you will see the difference from typical medical offices. You enter into a large multipurpose room that can be used for fitness classes, tutoring or group educational sessions on topics like nutrition or health literacy. A literacy corner will allow parents to prepare children for academic success by reading to their child and borrowing books to encourage reading at home. There will be a teaching kitchen to bring families together around healthy food preparation. The medical exam rooms are tucked away in the back hall.
